Potential Benefits of Sauna Use There are some studies which suggest regular use of a sauna can have beneficial effects on individuals with high blood pressure, chronic congestive heart failure or rheumatic disease. Using a sauna may also provide some relief for individuals with asthma or bronchitis. It should be noted, however, further research is needed to confirm this. Potential Risks of Sauna Use For the most part saunas are safe; however, take some caution if you know you have or have had any of the following conditions: • Atopic dermatitis – Sweating may cause an increase in itching. • Unstable angina pectoris • Recent myocardial infarction (heart attack) • Severe aortic stenosis – narrowing of the heart valve between the left ventricle of the heart and the aorta. There should be NO consumption of alcohol prior to using the sauna. Any consumption of alcohol may put you at risk of hypotension (low blood pressure), arrhythmias (irregularities in heart beat rhythm), or worst case scenario, sudden death.
