The Gym

The YMCA Health and Fitness Centre has been a part of Invercargill, and supplying members with the means to exercise for over 25 years. Our unisex facility is home to a wide range of exercise equipment and our Health and Fitness instructors are dedicated to assisting and providing our members with quality health and fitness related advice and guidance, in an effort to achieve their realistic training goals.

Upon signing up at the YMCA gym, members have the option of completing a basic assessment to gauge a baseline fitness level as well as have an individualized training programme designed for them. Throughout the course of a membership, members can reschedule these assessments and programme changes as much as they wish; however, it is recommended these take place no more regular than every 5 to 6 weeks as to allow reasonable physiological changes occur.

sauna

Potential Benefits of Sauna Use
There are some studies which suggest regular use of a sauna can have beneficial effects on individuals with high blood pressure, chronic congestive heart failure or rheumatic disease. Using a sauna may also provide some relief for individuals with asthma or bronchitis. It should be noted, however, further research is needed to confirm this.

Potential Risks of Sauna Use
For the most part saunas are safe; however, take some caution if you know you have or have had any of the following conditions:
• Atopic dermatitis – Sweating may cause an increase in itching.
• Unstable angina pectoris
• Recent myocardial infarction (heart attack)
• Severe aortic stenosis – narrowing of the heart valve between the left ventricle of the heart and the aorta.
There should be NO consumption of alcohol prior to using the sauna. Any consumption of alcohol may put you at risk of hypotension (low blood pressure), arrhythmias (irregularities in heart beat rhythm), or worst case scenario, sudden death.
