Modern life can be stressful, so any way of reducing stress and enhancing health is worth checking out, right? Many New Zealanders are using an ancient Chinese exercise to help them relax and improve their health and wellbeing.
Tai Chi appeals to us because it can be practiced by anyone, anywhere and at anytime, regardless of age or fitness.
Tai Chi:
• is a gentle physical activity that relaxes the body and calms the mind
• involves exercises to coordinate the breath with simple body movements that are often linked together and performed as a free-flowing series
• at beginner’s level is not physically challenging which is why the form appeals to a broad cross-section of people.
While the philosophy that underpins Tai Chi is outside the field of conventional Western medicine, the positive effects of Tai Chi have been clinically proven. As a result Tai Chi is gaining increasing respect from the medical community.
Strong evidence has shown that Tai Chi can be beneficial for people suffering from various ailments, including Arthritis, Heart Disease, Diabetes, Depression and Respiratory Diseases.
Posture, digestion and immunity may also be enhanced through regular practice. It’s no surprise, therefore, that many Western doctors now recommend Tai Chi as a supplement or alternative to mainstream medicine for a range of health conditions
